Houseplants can be a five dollar hobby or a five hundred dollar one, and the difference is rarely visible at checkout. These are realistic 2026 US price ranges from nurseries, garden centers, and online shops, plus a short list of the places money quietly disappears.

Soil and consumables
- Quality all-purpose potting mix: $6 to $12 for 8 quarts, $15 to $25 for 25 quarts. Never garden soil indoors.
- Specialty mixes (orchid bark, succulent grit, aroid mix): $8 to $20 per bag, or mix your own with our soil recipes for roughly half the price.
- Balanced liquid fertilizer: $8 to $15 per bottle, which lasts a full season or two of monthly feeding.
- Perlite, worm castings, horticultural charcoal: $5 to $12 each, and a bag of each covers a year of repotting.
Where money is wasted
- Pot upgrades too early. Jumping from a 6 inch pot to a 12 inch pot kills plants and wastes soil. One size up, every time; the calculator does the math.
- Moisture meters and apps replacing fingers. A finger two knuckles deep in the soil is free and more reliable than most cheap meters.
- Fertilizer optimism. Doubling the dose does not double growth; it burns roots. Half strength, more often, wins.
