Two fungal problems account for most of the spots and films you will see on indoor plant leaves. They look different, they start under different conditions, and they need different responses. Telling them apart takes about ten seconds once you know what to look at.
Powdery mildew: a coating on the surface
Powdery mildew looks like someone dusted the plant with talcum powder. University of Minnesota Extension describes it as white to gray powder on leaves, stems, and buds, noting that infected plants may appear to be sprinkled with baby powder or covered in cobwebs. It usually starts as small round patches that spread and merge. Severely affected leaves yellow and drop.
The key diagnostic feature is that the growth sits on top of the leaf. You can smudge it with a fingertip. The tissue underneath may be perfectly green at first.
Leaf spot: damage inside the leaf
Leaf spots are defined lesions within the leaf tissue itself. You cannot rub them off. Minnesota Extension notes that leaf spots come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, from yellow to brown to black, with angular or rounded outlines and smooth or fringed edges.
Some general patterns help. Fungal spots are often round or irregular, tan or brown, sometimes with a darker ring or a lighter dead center. Bacterial spots tend to look water-soaked, are often angular because they stop at leaf veins, and frequently carry a yellow halo. Both start on the lower, inner, more crowded parts of a plant where humidity stays highest.
The conditions that invite each one
Here is the part that surprises people: these two diseases want opposite things from water.
Leaf spot pathogens need free water. Minnesota Extension is specific that most leaf spot diseases need either water on the leaves or very high humidity for a prolonged period, 12 to 24 hours, to start an infection. Splashing water spreads spores from spot to spot and plant to plant.
Powdery mildew does not. Minnesota Extension notes it doesn’t need moisture on the leaf from rain or dew to infect, and that it is favored by cool, humid nights that stimulate spore production combined with warm, dry days that allow spores to spread. That is why powdery mildew can appear on a plant you have never misted.
What both share is a preference for still, crowded, humid air. Poor circulation is the common denominator.
Fixing the conditions first
Cultural changes do more than any spray you can buy for a houseplant.
- Space things out. Minnesota Extension recommends proper spacing and pruning to improve air circulation through the canopy. Plants should not be touching.
- Keep leaves dry. Water the soil, not the foliage. Skip misting on a plant with leaf spot.
- Add gentle air movement. A small fan on low across the room breaks up the humid microclimate around leaves.
- Thin dense growth. Removing a few interior leaves lets light and air into the middle of a bushy plant.
- Go easy on nitrogen. Minnesota Extension advises avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which pushes out soft growth that infects easily.
Treatment options, honestly framed
Start by removing affected leaves and disposing of them, not composting them indoors. Minnesota Extension notes that diseases survive in fallen leaves and can reinfect, so clear debris off the soil surface too.
Understand what a fungicide can and cannot do. Minnesota Extension is clear that fungicides will not cure or remove existing powdery mildew infections, and that treatment is aimed at protecting healthy tissue before infection develops. If you use one, choose a product labeled for houseplants and for your specific disease, and apply it early rather than as a rescue.
It is also fine to tolerate minor infections. Minnesota Extension explicitly lists tolerating infections that do not affect plant vigor as a management option. A few spots on an otherwise thriving plant do not require chemistry.
Prevention habits
Inspect weekly, especially the lower interior leaves. Isolate anything showing spots until you know what it is. Water in the morning so any splashed foliage dries quickly. Clean your pruners between plants. And when you buy, check the undersides and inner leaves before the plant ever comes home.
